Principles of Biology by Nature Education... A College Level eText Review.

After being modestly disappointed by my past several reviews, I thought to myself that I must be going about this entirely the wrong way. So far, I've found decent materials that I'd categorize as either "portable pdf -style textbooks with good graphics but no real interactive features" and "interactive - lite" materials. But I was looking  for the VERY BEST (most interactive, engaging, differentiated, 21st Century, 5 STAR-rated materials). As I starting to think about my next review, a "light bulb" of sorts went off. Certainly OTHERS have already reviewed science digital textbooks and if so, I could simply GOOGLE my query and come up with LISTS of the very best science digital textbooks!

So I just GOOGLED it, it being "Best interactive science digitial textbooks." Among the first few pages of the hit list, I found mostly advertisements for "cheap digital textbooks" and "used science textbooks" admist a few links to Apple iBooks and CK-12 books (both reviewed previously). At this point, I was quite certain that my dissapointment stems from the newness of this endeavor. Publishers just aren't "THERE" yet. Demand is growing RAPIDLY and supply just can't CATCH UP with THE BEST of the BEST materials just yet. From a publisher's point of view, competition is low, thus ANY digital text is better than NO digital text. During my search, I did find an interesting link to a New York Times article on a new publishing company called Nature Education that aims to create materials for digitive natives. So I requested a review of their first book, Principles of Biology. The book is geared for undergraduate students enrolled in beginning level biology courses. I originally hoped to review materials for K-12, however, I needed to find the BEST of the best, and the article had claimed this company was on the cutting edge, offering a refreshing version of electronic texts.


Here's what I found. The book is a web based (browser viewed) tool and includes 196 modules. Teachers can turn "on and off" modules and can modify/add to the text and actually REPUBLISH their own version of the text. This feature was new and refreshing. Teachers could also post announcements, set due dates on a built in calendar, create or use built in discussions in the discussion board feature, use or create built in assignments, administer quizzes, and use an available grade book. So this "text" was in essence more like a learning management system like Blackboard or Edmodo, but with content already in place. I liked this element and I liked it alot! Teachers can then be the orchastrators of teaching and learning, versus trying to design and develop all of the content for their course. There simply is not enough time to start from scratch. Yet they can also author and publish as time, expertise, and interest allow.



As far interactive features go, the text allows students to take "notes" and make "study cards" from their highlights and comments. There are self tests/assignments built in to help students reflect on their learning. There is also an abundance of "other resources" such as related primary research articles, "lenses on biology" articles showing the importantance of scientific research is to the real world, and links to other web resources such as biology labs. End of unit summaries, a glossary (with spoken pronunciations) and end of the unit tests also allow students to engage with the materials. There are built in video features and animations, yet I wished there were more and that students had to do more critical thinking and problem solving along the way.


My Rating... 4.5 STARS. Principles in Biology is fresh, comprehensive, and a pioneer among the others. However, students are still more passive than active. The text is still "BYOIM" (bring your own intrinsic motivation). What I am hoping to find is more and better ways for students to REALLY ENGAGE with the content. I'm looking for gamer-like features that pull students into a state of FLOW... in a way that they (our students) can't STOP "playing" with the material. I'm calling for resources that call upon mastery learning,  allowing students to work at their own pace, master the material, and feel compelled to keep going. I want materials that allow students to be creative and imaginative problem solvers. Yep, I want it all. But I know that it can be done! Ask any middle school student drawn into games like Mindcraft - they don't want to stop learning - even after dinner is on the table!

Our 5 Star Rating System!

Our Digital Resource Learning Community is developing a "five-star" rating system for the digital texts reviewed by our community. Below is the list of criteria we are using in this evaluative process. What have we missed?

IQWST: A Middle School Science App

I am truly excited for this review and have perhaps unrealistically HIGH expectations, as the development team for this curriculum really knows how to do GOOD teaching and learning. These individuals have been at the cutting edge of reform and research based science teaching and technology integration. So, here I go... fingers crossed (so far I haven't found a digital resource earning more than 2 of 5 STARS using our RATING SYSTEM - see earlier BLOGS).

First, a little about the curriculum. IQWST (Investigating Questions about our World through Science and Technology) is a science curriculum for middle grades learners funded by the National Science Foundation and created by an interdisciplinary team of science teachers, scientists, literacy experts, curriculum designers, and university researchers. IQWST is funded by the National Science Foundation. The collaborative initiative is led by the University of Michigan's Center for Highly Interactive Classrooms, Curricula and Computing in Education (hic3e) and Northwestern University, in partnership with Michigan State University, Columbia University, the University of Illinois, and Project 2061.science educators at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.

As stated on the IQWST website, "IQWST materials align with national standards, are rooted in principles of project-based scientific inquiry, focus on science’s “big ideas,” and employ research-based practices shown to promote students’ science and science literacy learning. This coordinated curriculum for grades 6-8 sequences physics, earth science, biology and chemistry instruction to build upon students’ prior knowledge and experiences in the real world, and to build understanding from unit to unit both within and across the middle school years. Students learn complex scientific ideas by engaging in practices that include working with models, constructing scientific explanations, engaging in argumentation and debate, analyzing data gathered either from students' own investigations or captured within complex datasets, and presenting ideas to peers."

I reviewed the Physical Science 2 Energy Unit App: Why do some things stop while others keep going? I'm viewing this App on my iPad, and I believe this is the only format now available.

Drum Roll Please... All in all, this app is the BEST I've seen so far, but it still received only 4 of 5 stars.

Here's why:

The App is a beta version and only the first lesson of the 12 lesson unit was available to me for this review. This lesson included a student section of the app with a video introduction and interactive note-taking opportunities throughout. The unit also included lesson activity directions (inquiry based, hands on lessons) and a lesson reading (with a read-aloud option). The note-taking opportunities include sections to record responses to the driving question, listing and identifying core scientific principles, a My Notes pad with an email function, and a model sketcher.

The App also included a teacher section. The available teacher resources included several sections accessible from the teacher menu bar, including: lesson set up, safety information, differentiation ideas, lesson introduction, activities/lesson plan, reading introduction, assessments (quiz), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) standard correlations and mathematics/LA Common Core standard alignment, unit overview (driving question tips), learning sets (I really liked these sets, which organized the unit into chunks of related lessons to achieve larger goal), scientific principles (another nice addition highlighting 18 BIG ideas found within the unit such as every moving object has kinetic energy), a unit calendar (which included suggested time requirements for lesson activities, readings, and homework).

So the design framework for the curriculum is simply first rate. 5 STARS. Yet, I still found the App to be lacking in some ways I had hoped it would have soared.

Specifically, the App's navigation was not intuitive. To go to student pages, I learned I needed to swipe down. To go to the teacher pages, swipe across, and then use the menu to the right. However, I could not find any help screens or orientation information, so it took me a little while to get the hang of the movement needed to access the information desired. Keeping in mind I reviewed a beta version, I was nevertheless frustrated by the navigation difficulties. There were a few other glitches found throughout the App. For example, the rolling can prediction response did not "run." Yet most disappointing was the Model Sketcher. It was really glitchy and seems pointless to include. I did not find any instructions directing students to use the Model Sketcher for any activities. Even if students were to use the sketcher option, the sketcher did not work within the App. The sketcher needs further development for certain.

The App also seemed to lack the BEST that technology has to offer. Although there was interactive opportunities presented which included options for students to respond to prompts using digital note-taking. If the iPad had "Siri" or other voice recognition abilities (which mine did not), I think students should be able to voice record notes (which I would consider an important strategy for differentiation). However, I was really hoping the App might include interactive animations and simulations. For example, students could construct their own "Rube Goldberg" machine or design and construct a digital perpetual motion machine. Students could easily be directed to take pictures using the tablet camera and add these to their notes. They could create a movies as an assessment of their understanding of the scientific principles as found in their real world. The quiz was a traditional multiple choice quiz found only in the teacher's section. Why not include an on-line quiz that could be taken in class or at home. If in class, the teacher could provide immediate feedback and graph the class results. The responses could then be used as a formative assessment tool providing rich information for discussion. I felt like many engaging interactive technology opportunities were missed. Again, this could be because the module is still in beta version or because electronic resource development is such a new endeavor, but either way, more interactive uses of technology to bring about deeper learning through student construction of knowledge is clearly needed.

This team of curriculum developers must know this too, as their written materials are highly engaging and framed in constructivist theory. I believe it is simply a matter of time before electronic student resources catch up with the times. And that can't happen too soon, as the students are ready and waiting!

CK12 Foundation: Sustainable Energy: Without the Hot Air

The Good: The text is relevant and current with a 2012 publication date. The information is accurate and interesting. The book focuses on sustainable energy and examines the issue from a British perspective. The book makes a strong case for looking at the data in order to better understand that we cannot sustain the energy plan used today. Alternative renewable energy sources are critiqued and labeled as "good" or "bad." Graphs and  illustrations are good as well. 

The resource is a digital version of a textbook. There is no way for the user to interact with the content. No multimedia. Many of the images are not available in the iBook version of  the Flex Book. However you can also download the book as a mobi or pdf file. The online version of the book does have images that load without error.

Because the book is written from the British perspective, the units of measurement are also in the British standard format. Metrics throughout as well as other British units not commonly used in United States. The content seems most appropriate for upper-level high school or even college courses studying sustainable energy. It is definitely not appropriate for middle school or lower high school. Information presented is presented in a straightforward way, and the author is quick to point out the good the bad and the ugly when it comes to sustainable energy. The last half of the of the book contains information that is highly technical, leaving me wonder what sort of course might be able to use this depth of information. It is probably best for an energy course at the university level. I believe the book could be an excellent reference book for teachers and I will probably use it this way in the future when teaching an introduction to environmental studies course at our university.

I give this first review a TWO STAR rating, as it is chock full of excellent information, but presented in a traditional way rather than utilzing the potential of learning in the digital age.

First Digital Text Review: CK-12 Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air

My first Digital Text Review will be CK-12 Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air. This resource comes from the CK-12 Foundation.


The CK-12 Foundation addresses the growing costs of textbooks and the closed, outdated medium in which they are available. Focusing specifically on textbooks for U.S. K-12 schools, the nonprofit works with states and institutions to build web-based, collaborative “flexbooks” that are free to use and adapt in multiple formats like PDF, iPad and Kindle. Over 90 textbooks are available for reuse under the CC BY-NC-SA license. The CK-12 Foundation is also a major contributor to the California Free Digital Textbooks Initiative, a CA initiative that aligns open textbooks to state standards (S. Banister, 2013).

So this is my Science Education Digital Content Blog. Goal... learn more about digital resources to support middle childhood and AYA science teaching. Each month, I will review one to three new resources. We will rate the resources using a 5 star system.
